There’s no feeling quite like the rush of panic when you lose control of your car on the road! Whatever the road conditions, you are rarely prepared when your car goes into a skid. We believe that everyone should be taught how to manage in such a situation, and our Skid Pan driving sessions do just that.
Based just outside Bury St Edmunds on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, our Skid Pan sessions are the perfect introduction to controlling your vehicle in slippery road conditions.
It is ideal for all drivers, whether you are an experienced driver or brand new behind the wheel. It’s the most enjoyable way to learn some new driving skills that could be potentially life-saving. Be road ready for winter!
What the Skid Pan Session Looks Like
Upon arrival our Skid Pan driving host will meet everyone at the entrance and then lead you to our on-site base. There is a short safety briefing, before splitting into smaller groups. Our expert driving instructors start off by demonstrating skid control and braking practises. Then it’s your turn! You and your group take turns, taking the opportunity to drive hands on learning how to control and correct the skids that you get into.
Our Skid Pan sessions are particularly popular as we do not use a cradle to simulate a skid. The track is created to resemble similar conditions you might expect on the road. We use both front and rear wheel drive vehicles and you will of course, have the chance to experiment with both. Following the session and the final debrief, all applicants are presented with an Explore 4×4 Skid Pan certificate.
I’m just writing to say thank you for Saturday. The ‘kids’ had a fantastic time! It’s fair to say that only one of them was keen before the day, the other two weren’t all that engaged with the idea. However they were enthusiastic when we arrived and as it turns out they were so excited when they saw what was involved and they had the greatest experience. Your instructors are friendly and kind and everyone was very warm which just made it a relaxed, fun experience. Big bonus for me too in that I saw them competently learn how to handle vehicles and was very pleasantly surprised with how capable they were by the end of it. It was great fun.G. McLoughlin
Don’t let your first skid be your last! This, is a little morbid, but it could be true. A number of our guests come to us because they have had scary experiences and subsequently lost their confidence on the road. Our training sessions are great fun, our instructors will put you at ease and we take it at the driver’s pace.
Our goal is to reduce vehicle damage and repair costs, reduce environmental damage and most importantly, to help you understand what to do in a crisis, to improve driver confidence and driver safety.
Typically, we tend to hold sessions on selected Saturday mornings throughout the year. We will offer you the dates currently available, and you can choose from them.
If you have a group at the ready of a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 we can accomodate you any day of the week, apart from Sundays!
All drivers must be 17 years old and hold UK or European driving license and be able to drive a manual car. Freshly passed drivers are more than welcome, we encourage new drivers to experiment with a skid pan session as it is not something taught in lessons.
The session lasts for half a day, 9am – 1pm approximately.
Each session is shared between 8-12 people. The group is divided to take turns in each vehicle.
Briefings, instructor demonstrations, skid control and braking practice in both front and rear wheel cars both with the instructor to start with and then without.
You can bring a spectator along with you. Please note that we can not accommodate more than one spectator per person.
As the venue is on a military base, it is vital you bring your ID with you, if you fail to do this you won’t be allowed on site.
Please note that Pre-Booking for our Skidpan training is essential.
