For those of you wanting a National Award qualification, LANTRA Awards are a nationally recognised Awarding Body.
They are approved to both develop and accredit off roading qualifications such as NVQ/SVG and VRQ by OFQUAL and SQA the Regulatory Bodies of qualifications. They specialise in the land based and environmental sectors, but also offer national qualifications in a range of subject areas including technical awards. Training and Assessment is delivered through LANTRA registered and approved instructors. Explore 4×4 are approved LANTRA training providers with qualified instructors.
What We Offer
One Day Off Road Vehicle Operating (4×4)

Assessment and Corrective training. An integrated training and assessment course for a maximum of three people per instructor.
- A LANTRA fee of £37 per person applies to this course.
Successful trainees are awarded a nationally recognised skills ID card which states competence with 4x4s – Principles of off road vehicle operating & Operating vehicles in off road adverse conditions.
Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available throughout the day.
Course Objectives
- comply with legal requirements and safe practice – to understand legal and practical requirements for travelling on a public road
- identify risks associated with with off road vehicle use
- select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- understand the main causes of accidents
- identify the controls, systems and components of the vehicle
- perform pre-start checks
- identify and report faults
- prepare the vehicle for use of road
- assess the suitability of the ground/route
- make structured decisions about if and how to tackle obstacles
- perform a failed hill climb
- drive over a variety of terrain
- perform an on-site risk assessment
- identify the loading/towing capacities
- identify the dangers of vehicle recovery/self recovery
- demostrate decision making skills based on considering the attributes of: the obstacle/situation – the vehicle – the driver

Course Requirements
All training requires appropriate dress. Suitable outdoor clothing and supportive footwear.
Drivers must be 17 years or older for our Training sessions.
