For those needing a little more in-depth skill, in our Trailer Towing: Off Road course will you will learn to tow trailers off-road with skill and confidence. Trailers are used extensively both in and outside work. You might be transporting a vital piece of agricultural equipment or simply hitching a car to a caravan. Whatever your needs, towing a trailer off-road requires a high level of skill. Our course will teach you that skill.
Trailer Handling
Training (with Assessment )
This training course has been developed to support you handle trailers safely; either as work-related training or for leisure/recreational use (such as caravans, boats, and horse boxes).
The amount of instruction you will require will depend largely upon your previous experience and sessions will be adapted to meet your needs. Course duration will depend on experience and will be from one to two days.
The training course will consist of theory and practical sessions, followed by assessment.
Course sessions include:
- Trailer towing safety and the law
- Common causes of accidents
- Hitch types and towing combinations
- Coupling/uncoupling procedures
- Trailer maintenance
- Nose weight measurement
- Trailer handling and reversing
- Braking exercise
- Assessment
If successful in meeting the required standards assessed, you will be awarded a certificate of competence and a Lantra skills ID card for your chosen certificate option(s).
Who should attend?
This course is for you if you are or will be required to tow a trailer. As you’ll appreciate, this course contains some practical activity that will require a minimum level of fitness. If you have any concerns, please speak to the Provider.
What will be covered?
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- understand the legal requirements for towing a trailer on/off road
- appreciate the main causes of accidents and how to avoid them
- understand the main principles of ‘safe towing’
- identify the maximum towing weights of specific vehicle/trailer combinations, and apply
them to the type of use they are being subjected to - measure nose weight, and correctly set up a vehicle/trailer combination
- couple and uncouple the trailer correctly and safely
- understand the importance of trailer maintenance
- carry out full pre-driving checks
- drive the vehicle and trailer (unit) through a series of turns and
reverse into a restricted area.
Prerequisites: This course is suitable for any suitable towing vehicle, for
which both the Learner and Instructor is adequately prepared/licenced to operate.

The expected duration for the course is one day, however please note this may vary according to factors such as level of experience, modules or attachments selected, or the ratio of Instructors to Learners. The following recommended durations have been developed as guidance to assist Providers:
One day – operators with good previous experience and/or current or recently expired trailer handling certification.
Two days – for operators with limited or no trailer handling experience.

Trailer Towing: Off Road
Training (with Assessment )
Our course involves a balanced mix of theory and practical sessions. It’s for very small groups, so you’ll be guaranteed plenty of one-to-one instruction.
You’ll learn the ins and outs of safety and the legal requirements regarding trailers.
We’ll also give you an overview of the different types of trailers out there – and what they can and cannot do.
Then it’s time for the hands-on sessions. You’ll learn to couple/uncouple and load your trailer. Off-road practice follows, including key braking exercises.

- Types of trailer and hitch – suitability for purpose and limitations of use
- Causes of accidents
- Coupling/un-coupling procedures
- Off-road trailer towing
- Loading – effects on stability/control
- Vehicle/trailer checks
- Braking exercise
- Limitations of braking system.
Who should attend?
Anyone who needs to use a trailer off road or who want to practice off road before venturing onto the highways.
What will be covered?
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
- Understand the legal requirements when towing trailers
- Carry out equipment safety checks
- Understand how the type and weight of a trailer affects off-road performance and safety
- Understand the relationship between vehicle and trailer weights and limits and how they
are affected by off-road use - Couple/uncouple the trailer from a vehicle
- Understand the requirements of driving the vehicle and trailer combination off-road
Prerequisites: You must have attended the Lantra Awards Trailer Handling course (see above) within the previous 12 months. You’ll need a valid driving licence, including any of the relevant categories required. You’ll also need to hold a current Lantra Awards 4×4 Professional Off-Road Driving Certificate of Training, or equivalent.
